PONGAL CELEBRATIONS REPORT- 2023

Pongal  is the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu celebrated enthusiastically on the first day of ‘Thai’(Tamil month).It is a celebration to thank  the Sun God, Mother Nature and the various farm animals that help to contribute to a bountiful harvest. It usually falls on the 14th or 15th January in the English calendar. The festival is named after the ceremonial “Pongal”,which means “to boil, overflow” and refers to the traditional dish prepared from the new harvest of rice boiled in milk with jaggery. The festival continues for over four days. Mar Gregorios College of Arts & Science celebrated Pongal on13th January 2023.The program started with the lighting of KuthuVilakku by the dignitaries and was followed by TamizhthaiVazhthu. Dr.Iyappan welcomed the gathering. The Secretary Rev.Fr.MathewPallikunnel blessed and greeted all the participants on the occasion, and the Principal Dr M.Sivarajan felicitated the viewers. Dr T.Prema,the Convener of the event  introduced  the Special Guest Dr.K.Shankar, Assistant Professor,Department of Tamil, Govt.ArtsCollege,Nanthanam.

The Guest of the day addressed the spectators by explaining the importance of the festival as ‘Pongal welcomes new beginnings’. The festival is significant as it marks the end of a six-month-long night, according to Hindu mythology. With Pongal begins the day of the Gods, according to mythology. The first day of the four-day festival is marked by the harvesting of paddy. A pooja is performed when farmers worship the Sun and anoint their ploughs and sickles with sandalwood paste before harvesting paddy. The second day is dedicated to the Sun God. The third day marks the worship of cattle. Later, the Pongal offered to the deities are distributed among the cattle and birds. The four days festival is celebrated by everyone with great happiness, as it is believed that Pongal is the festival known as the harbinger of hope and joy.

Pattimandram was held for the Staff  members and Students on account of Pongal celebration. The teams are headed by Prof.Balachander, Head, Dept.of Commerce Shift I and Dr.N.Kalaiarasi,AssistantProfessor,Department of Tamil,Shift II  along with the students. Dr.C.Devaraj,AssistantProfessor,Department of Tamil recited a poem about Pongal festival. A Cultural Programme was performed by the students of MGC. The convener of the programmeDr.T.Prema, Head,Department of Tamil and the members of the department brought a true ethnic feeling which gave life to the dwellers of the village for a day. Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr.A.Rajalakshmi,AssistantProfessor,Department of Business Administration,Shift II. The programme ended with National Anthem.
